EEG Activity and Communication with the Deceased study published

NEW RESEARCH STUDY PUBLISHED
Electrocortical Activity and Communication with the Deceased

During advanced meditative practices, unusual perceptions can arise including the sense of receiving information about unknown people who are deceased. As with meditation, this mental state of communication with the deceased involves calming mental chatter and becoming receptive to subtle feelings and sensations. Psychometric and brain electrophysiology data were collected from six individuals who had previously reported accurate information about deceased individuals under double-blind conditions.

Beyond Neuroscience: The Challenge of Yoga
EdgeScience Magazine – NEW ARTICLE

This month's edition of EdgeScience pairs a short excerpt from Dean Radin's book, Supernormal, with an in-depth article by Donald DeGracia about how yoga contributes to our understanding of what's known as "the mind-body problem"—or the link between our subjective and objective natures—and what we can know about the nature of reality. Dr. Radin writes about what the future may hold for the integration of science and ancient contemplative practices like yoga, and why it matters.

Calling for more study on all aspects of consciousness

Open letter in a mainstream journal calling for more study on all aspects of consciousness

Some 90 scientists and academics, including IONS researchers, have co-signed a letter that calls for more mainstream support of open and honest investigation of parapsychological topics and related mysteries of human consciousness. The letter—a demonstration of interest in psi among many mainstream academics—is written by Etzel CardeƱa of Lund University and published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience.

"An informative and thought-provoking scientific presentation on the nature of mind; and so funny and entertaining too!" ~ Viewer comment

Did Buddha's teachings survive and thrive because he was more attractive or charismatic than most, or was it more than that? Did he have profound insights into the nature of Reality? We might ask the same of Jesus, Moses, Mohammed, Milarepa, and a host of other historically prominent figures associated with special illumination, wisdom, or grace. What does science tell us?

Metaphysics of the Tea Ceremony study now published

NEW RESEARCH STUDY PUBLISHED
Metaphysics of the Tea Ceremony

Besides the use of fresher and perhaps more nutritious ingredients, homemade soup offers a component that is absent from commercial soups—mother's nurturing intentions. Do such intentions matter? This study investigated the roles of intention and belief on mood while drinking oolong tea under double-blind, randomized conditions. Results suggest that if you believe/expect that you are consuming a specially treated substance, that belief alone will strongly influence your mood. But if the substance is also intentionally "treated," then it will influence you even more. The study's outcome supports the intention-enhancement hypothesis.

The Overview Effect 20 min free documentary

Here is a great 20 minute mini documentary about the "Overview Effect" called Overview. It features five astronauts, one in which is IONS founder Edgar Mitchell. It's a beautiful and powerful film that puts his transformative experience into context.

On the 40th anniversary of the famous ‘Blue Marble’ photograph taken of Earth from space, Planetary Collective presents a short film documenting astronauts’ life-changing stories of seeing the Earth from the outside – a perspective-altering experience often described as the Overview Effect.

The Overview Effect, first described by author Frank White in 1987, is an experience that transforms astronauts’ perspective of the planet and mankind’s place upon it. Common features of the experience are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.

‘Overview’ is a short film that explores this phenomenon through interviews with five astronauts who have experienced the Overview Effect. The film also features insights from commentators and thinkers on the wider implications and importance of this understanding for society, and our relationship to the environment.

IONS announces Cassandra Vieten as new CEO/President

Special Message from Bill Sechrest, IONS Board Chair

Dear IONS Community,

It is with great pleasure that I am writing to let you know that on Monday, March 25, Cassandra Vieten accepted the offer from the IONS Board of Directors to succeed Steve Villano as the new CEO and President of the Institute of Noetic Sciences. We are grateful for Steve's important transitional leadership, his vision, and his commitment to restructuring and reorienting our organization in ways that will enable IONS to flourish in the 21st century.Cassandra VietenCassandra Vieten, PhD

The IONS Board of Directors named Dr. Vieten as the 7th president of IONS with great enthusiasm, and we believe she is the ideal person to lead the Institute into the future. She combines a deep love and respect for IONS and its history with an inspiring vision for what IONS can become, with scientific investigation of consciousness at the core. She has been an integral part of IONS work for many years and has a profound connection with the organization, most recently serving as IONS Executive Director of Research.

Expressing his excitement about Dr. Vieten's appointment, IONS Founder Dr. Edgar Mitchell said, "The appointment of Cassi as CEO and President is directly in line with my original founding vision for the Institute of Noetic Sciences, and I couldn't be more thrilled. Her years of service and dedication to the IONS mission are a valuable asset to IONS as we go into the future."

Cassandra Vieten is a leader of a new generation of Noetic Scientists. She is a licensed clinical psychologist and has served as the co-director of the Mind-Body Medicine Research Group at California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute in San Francisco, and co-president of the Institute for Spirituality and Psychology. Her primary interest is in exploring how psychology, biology, and spirituality interact to affect experience and behavior. She has authored numerous books, chapters, and academic articles, and presented at international scientific conferences, as well as workshops and events for the lay public.

Speaking about her appointment, Cassi said, "Words cannot convey how honored I am to take the helm of an organization that for four decades has led the way in scientific investigation of realms of human experience that are important to most people, yet have been relatively neglected by mainstream science. I am proud to be a part of this community of visionary scientists, scholars, explorers, educators, healers, and others who are dedicated to shifting our individual and collective consciousness in ways that promote well-being for all."

Cassi is highly respected both inside of IONS and by her colleagues across the country and around the world. We are fortunate to have both her intellect and her heart at our service. This is an exciting time of change and new beginnings for IONS, and you'll be hearing more details in the coming weeks.

Best regards,

Bill Sechrest
IONS Board Chair
